YOUNG AUDIENCES
Through its work in schools, Uzume has reached thousands of children, acknowledging and celebrating Canada's cultural diversity along the way. By sharing our experiences as Canadians from different backgrounds, we can gain a better understanding of others, and ourselves creating a better world in the process.
SCHOOL SHOWS
Every year, Uzume Taiko performs in dozens of schools throughout the Lower Mainland and B.C. Breaking down the boundaries between music and dance, Uzume Taiko celebrates the rhythm of life itself, creating shows that are accessible to everyone.
Elementary School Shows
In the Elementary School Show, Uzume Taiko tell a Japanese story "Against All Odds" based on true events and a universal theme in which the underdog triumphs over an overwhelming force. The simple villagers work together to devise a plan to thwart the mighty Samurai enemy. Through negotiation and teamwork, they discover an effective non-violent solution to their difficult situation.
Educational Links: music, drama, Japan, multiculturalism, discrimination
Secondary School Shows
Uzume Taiko's Secondary School Show is presented in a concert format, mixing traditional and contemporary pieces with mask work and humour. Designed for ages 12 to 112, the show is both entertaining and educational, introducing audiences to the infinite possibilities of music and movement.
Educational Links: music, composition, drama, Japan, multiculturalism
Both school shows run for 50 minutes and students are encouraged to ask questions following the performance. The only technical requirement is a flat performance area at least 30 feet deep by 40 feet wide. A single microphone is required for secondary schools. Due to the number of instruments, a set-up time of one and a half hours is required. A detailed study guide is provided ahead of time for advance preparation as well as teacher follow-up.
