WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES

Throughout the year, Uzume Taiko holds public workshops for people of varying ages and levels of skill. These are designed to teach students about the Japanese taiko drum through active participation in taiko drumming form, basic Japanese rhythms, verbal notation, sticking technique and group playing. Classes will focus on exercising the body, mind and spirit while training in a variety of drumming styles, movements and techniques.

FALL TAIKO WORKSHOPS!

Learn about the Japanese Taiko Drum through active participation in taiko drumming! The following Workshops will take place at the Taiko Space, near Frances and Clark Street in east Vancouver. 1. INTRODUCTION TO TAIKO DRUMMING for ages 16 years & Up

Instructor: Bonnie Soon

An introduction to the essentials of Japanese taiko drumming through active hands-on participation on student taiko drums. Warm up drills, proper grip on sticks, taiko stance and movements, kiai (vocal shouts), basic Japanese rhythms and learning a festival song will be covered.

Price: $65 (1 session)
Limited Enrolment: 12 participants maximum in class

2. BEGINNER TAIKO CLASS for ages 16 years & Up

Instructors: Bonnie Soon, Jason Overy, Naomi Kajiwara

Classes will focus on exercising the body, mind and spirit while training in the upright taiko drumming style. Taiko drumming form, sticking technique, rhythm and movement drills, kiai (vocal shouts) practice, verbal notation, taiko choreography and group playing of songs will be covered.

Date: 6 Weeks from Saturday, October 11 to November 15, 2008
Time: 11:30AM - 1:30PM
Price: $150 (6 sessions) plus $25 materials fee
Limited Enrolment: 12 participants maximum in class

3. BEGINNER YOUTH TAIKO CLASS for ages 8 years to 15 years

Instructor: Naomi Kajiwara

An introduction to the world of taiko drumming combined with the expression and musicality of funk and hip-hop beats and moves. This exciting class will focus on the use of rhythm and coordination while developing taiko technique and movements that are hip-hop based.

Time: 10:00AM - 11:15AM
Price: $120 (6 sessions) plus $25 materials fee
Limited Enrolment: 12 participants maximum in class

4. PRIVATE LESSONS & TUTORING AVAILABLE

Members of Uzume Taiko are available for private instruction and tutoring. Please contact bonnie@uzume.com for more information.

Price: $75 (per hour)

Additional notes:
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a pair of indoor shoes with good grip or participate in bare feet. Bring a towel and water and be prepared to sweat! Foam Earplugs will be available for purchase at the dojo or bring your own.
