Workshops and Classes

Throughout the year, Uzume Taiko holds public workshops for people of varying ages and levels of skill. These are designed to teach students about the Japanese taiko drum through active participation in taiko drumming form, basic Japanese rhythms, verbal notation, sticking technique and group playing. Classes will focus on exercising the body, mind and spirit while training in a variety of drumming styles, movements and techniques. Training For Taiko
 
60 minutes 
 
Get a full body workout and have fun playing common taiko rhythms. Training for Taiko class is for both taiko players and newcomers with no experience. Develop core strength, muscle endurance and train in the UZUME taiko style of drumming which uses dynamic upper and lower body movements. This class will improve your coordination, spatial awareness and drumming technique.

Advanced Taiko Training

Instruction for the Professional, Pre-Professional, or serious Taiko Student who is looking at getting to the next level in their training. Students invited to join this class, work with the Uzume Core Members during their regularly scheduled conditioning/training sessions. These advanced classes involve athletic training, basic technique/movement skills, as well as, improvisation and standard repetoire. Participation is by instructor's permission. Previous Taiko experience and a basic fitness level are prerequisites for this class. Advanced Taiko Training takes place during weekdays. Private Lessons

Members of Uzume Taiko are offering individual private lessons on various taiko, drums, percussion, and shinobue (bamboo flute). The class can either be a one-time introductory session or scheduled on an ongoing basis.

Fee: $50 per session (one hour)

Things to know about classes and workshops

  • Bring a towel and water and be prepared to sweat!
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a pair of indoor shoes with good grip or participate in bare feet.
  • Foam earplugs will be available for purchase at the dojo or bring your own.
  • Classes take place at the Taiko Space, near Frances and Clark Street in east Vancouver.
